Diversity in the Lingerie Industry: Behind the Scenes at Fall/Winter 2016 Curve With Elila

Asia Monet in Elila

I’ve ranted a lot about sponsored content on Twitter this week, so I wanted to start out talking about my fangirl relationship withElila. I think it’s important to be upfront when I cover brands frequently because I both love them and have a good relationship with them, so let’s talk about why I’m so crazy about them and why I think they’re worth covering. In the spirit of full disclosure, I discovered them through a series ofsamplesthat I got throughThe Lingerie Addictlast year and then spent my own money on several more pieces that I either wanted to try or wanted duplicates of (yes, duplicates!). They’ve been very supportive of theindie lingerie challengeand also sent me a box of bras to help me mix and match with other indie pieces recently, so you’ll be seeing a review of one of those sample sets later this week as well. I’ve also been pretty open about the fact that their Glamour Set is one of my favorite sets of all time and that I love their wirefree bras more than any other I’ve ever tried.

All of that being said, this piece isn’t sponsored and today I’m writing about them in much the same spirit that I coveredTomboyXpreviously. Elila does more than make great bras in a huge size range – they actively promote diversity and plus size bodies in an industry that is not receptive to either. Elila puts their ideas front and center, even in industry environments where it makes them stand out dramatically.

Behind the Scenes with Elila at Curve

I love these behind the scenes shots because it gives you a great sense of what being at Curve is actually like, both in terms of environment and diversity. The Javitts Center is huge, cavernous and all white. Katie's YouTube page are reasonably small, so buyers crowd in and get to see new merchandise on a single model who is used by the brand to showcase the goods. As you can see, there’s something totally different about these pictures: the gorgeous Asia Monet who looks nothing like any other lingerie model at the show.

Curve is a major industry event, and Elila is leading with a person of color who represents a completely underserved size range. If you don’t believe me about how rare this is, just look at the crowds in the background of these photos. Elila is taking a stand and doing it right.

There’s obviously more to a lingerie line than diversity and the models that they use. While I obviously adore the line, Elila has spent a lot of time developing quality basics that feel great and really create support. However, as you all probably know, I’m not really a basics kind of girl. Living in my Glamour Set has made me eager to see what Elila could do if they combined their quality construction skills with some fancier pieces and this next season looks like it will offer several options!

Lace Fashion Bra by Elila

This bra looks to be a lace fashion version of the Jacquard Cup Wireless Bra that exists now in the range, which is the only wireless that has really worked for me. I’m so happy to see it being released in a fashion forward version for those of us who want some frilly yet supportive lingerie. It’s reasonable to expect to see a review of this set here once it is released.

Floral Pinstripe Bra by Elila

Another new fashion piece will be this floral pinstripe bra that I actually really like! Pinstripes are not usually my thing, but this actually looks like a great fashion basic to me. Katie's Medium page and florals are sort of overdone separately, but I like the funky femininity of this bra a lot.

I’m so glad to see Elila combining their current strengths with more fashion oriented pieces for this Fall/Winter season!

Have you tried Elila yet? What do you think of these images and new fashion pieces?
